Charbonneau Men’s Club Monthly Board Meeting June, 2, 2025
Card Room of the Clubhouse
Meeting Minutes Draft
Greg Benesh: President calls the CMC meeting to Order @ 3:01 pm
Attending: Benesh, Bonino, Brown, Fieweger, Groshong, Johnson, McLeod, Stout, Williams. Guests: Jim Gibbons, Chris Bensel
Absent: Harp, Tyler, Vaughn and Taylor
Jim Gibbons: CGC An invitation will be sent out to all 3 associations to attend a “Rules Seminar” hosted by JG and with Joann Linville on June 26th from 6 to 8 PM in the Clubhouse or the Activity Center. Plans to cover situations like: drop from cart paths, drop from water hazards, differences between rough, hazard and bunker, marking a ball on the green, drainage ditches not yet ‘healed’ over, the phantom ‘root rule’, and local course rules. There is expected to be a hand out copy for attendees.
Greg Benesh announces that Richard McLeod will serve out his term as Social Chair in July. New candidate will be appointed to the CMC Board. RM will help the new person get established.
Richard McLeod: Social The June Men’s Night Out (MNO) on the 18th will have a 2 pm shotgun start for the 18 hole group, and a 3:15 start for the 9 hole group. The Pricing is $29 (9 hole) $31 (18 hole). The Event will be catered by The Butteville Store. The cost/person of the upcoming July 4th Couples scramble and dinner event will be $37 and $42 per person and will feature an “Hawaiian Feast” from Norton’s Café.
Jim Gibbons: Maintenance Update The remaining sand bunkers on Red Course have been filled with new sand. CGC will lease new equipment for greens keeping, plus add 15 new electric carts (bringing the total to 60). The new Cart Barn installed electricity last week, can begin storing Carts next week. Red Course (our oldest- built 1976) drainage is being addressed with more sanding of the fairways. We still have an issue with people (non-players) walking the cart paths of all the Courses. A walker injury (golf related) could present a huge liability to the Charbonneau. A plan is underway to make a ‘forward tee box’ on # 5 Red shortening the current distance. JG mentioned the new “Sandilee” short Course developed in West Linn – Par 3s with synthetic greens and tees. We could have a fun CMC Day there. Facilities and food are very good.
Spence Groshong – Invitational (Aug). 25 – 27 Teams (2 man) signed up for the two day major Event as of June 1. Need to get a minimum of 30 Teams. Some Board members will contact those members not signed up yet. A Report of the Invitational Sponsors will be at next month’s CMC Board meeting.
Richard McLeod – Membership RM reports that as of June 1, there are 244 CMC members. This compares with 244 members last season. 34 of the members this year are NEW. Also, 30 of the NEW members signed up for either/both 18 hole players and 9 hole players.
Lloyd Johnson – Website We discussed the ease of signing up for CMC membership with a Credit Card (instead of a check). There have been some instances of members not recalling whether they used a CC to sign up AND proceeded to sign up a second time. At last month’s CMC Board meeting we motioned that any ‘over payments’ to CMC would go to the Scholarship fund and not be refunded to the player. As Board members, we need to encourage CMC members to access the website more often – very informative and easy to sign up for events.
Mike Williams – Treasurer Mike send to Board members the latest balance sheet prior to this meeting. We are doing quite “OK”! Essentially, we are nearly ‘breakeven’ on the previous MNO and the Memorial Day Couples. Richard McLeod has been very accurate on the costs and pricing. MW points out that the breakeven point has always been our goal with Events. The new Social team for CMC will have to review ’26 event dates with Brooke and line up caterers ASAP for next season. Use Richard’s playbook.
Bill Stout – Scoring Bill compiled another current look at the pace of play of the last 17 events. Details show that the average foursome time for 18 holes is 3:36 (hrs.). This hits the goal of being under 3.5 hrs. Also, noted was the fact that these 17 events are averaging just 54 players – below the expected 62- 72/event. Bill mentioned that Don Larsen the newest member of Scoring is doing a fine job.
Tim Bonino – Publicity (Villager) Tim continues to write exceptional columns in the Villager for the CMC. His columns inform us of upcoming Events, give us amusing human interest stories, and thanks to those who make the CMC work well. BTW… Allen Southwell will turn 96 in July!
Mike Brown – OGA With the changes on some of the holes ( #4 Yellow) the OGA is reviewing the scoring submitted for updating handicap indices. The latest statistics show the Charbonneau Courses ‘difficulty’ goes as follows: Yellow then Green then Red. (I hope I got this right)
Greg Benesh – The All Presidents meeting last week – all were in favor of a Rules Seminar. Greg suggested that Tom Taylor work with Jim Gibbons on the email release of the “Rules Seminar” announcement to include all members of the 3 associations.
New Business: WHS Girls golf team WINS 5A Oregon State title again this year & our PGA Pro Chris Bensel is their Coach! Our CMC Budget to support the WHS Girls golf team is $500 per year. A MOTION was made by GB to increase the amount to $1000, seconded by Tim Bonino. The MOTION was carried by voice vote.
The WHS Girls golf team will compete at the Nationals next month in Pinehurst NC. Coach Chris will take his top 3 players. The $1000 will help with travel costs. A ‘fundraiser’ is planned at Charbonneau on June 16th called “Play with the Girls”.
Greg Benesh – President Adjourns the Meeting @ 4:35 pm
