Charbonneau Men’s Club (CMC) Board Meeting

July 1, 2025 (3 pm) Clubhouse Card Room

Attending:  Benesh, Bonino, Brown, Fieweger, Groshong, Johnson, McLeod, Stout, Tyler and Williams      Absent:  Harp, Vaughn

Invited Guests:  Gibbons and Taylor

President Greg Benesh started the meeting @ 2:58 pm.  GB announced that the CMC sponsored 4th of July Couples Event will have 82 couples playing 18 holes, and 3 couples playing 9 holes.  Great turnout!

Our next CMC Board Meeting, Aug 5th, will focus on Budgeting.

Jim Gibbons:  CGC Board input   The Golf Course is doing extremely well to date.  JG suggested we all go to our phone Apps Store to get the USGA Rules app (free).  USGA will no longer be publishing (12 MM) Rules of Golf booklets.  Asking for input from this Board, mention was made of:  leveling of tee boxes, bring back the tee box bucket for sand/seed for filling divots, and where can we fill our sand/seed containers.

JG and Joann Linville conducted a successful Rules of Golf seminar last week attended by about 50.  It was well done, with high interest, and likely will lead to follow up seminars.   Jim asked “Is there a Rules Committee of the CMC?” Not specifically.  Mike Brown has handled Rules information to the Board from OGA.  MB will also now have the ‘heading’ of Rules (besides his reports on greens and golf maintenance).

Tom Stell (CMC member) was mentioned as a good candidate for being on the Rules Committee.  Important to have “Local Rules” clearly stated for both course environment and event competition.

Spencer Groshong:  Invitational   As was reported to the CMC membership, the Invitational for 2025 (8/7 & 8/8) has been cancelled due to lower than expected team signups.  Chris Bensel had complete control of the Invitational this year.  CB felt that with only 30 (2 man) teams signed up, it wasn’t enough.  He had hoped for close to 60 teams.  The entry fees were all refunded.  SG suggested a two day:  member/guest day, then a member/member day in place.  However, the Tournament Committee had already decided and booked to have a “member/member” event on August 8th.   GB suggested that maybe the higher entry fee ($275) was what kept the team signups low even for a two day event.

Richard McLeod:  Membership and Social  Richard said that the CMC Membership is now (June 30) at 245.

Social:   RM put together a CMC calendar handout for the 2026 season.  He explained how the Board must work with Brooke in the office to line up dates, equipment needed, furniture, utilities, etc.  Normally the Office provides only a working microphone.  RM said prep help is needed 4th of July Couples event.  4 Board members volunteered to be there at 12:30 on the 4th.  RM said the 9 hole Players want to increase their buy-in for golf events from $3/player to $5/player.  This can be done through the website when signing up for the event, like Men’s Night Out.  Players (18 hole & 9 hole, or just dinner) must respond to the poster/flyer sent out to sign up for Couples and MNO.

4th of July Couples $37 (plus $5 game) $42

MNO July 23rd $28 (plus $5 game) $33

Looking at the 2026 calendar – the Kick-Off Breakfast will change from April 11 to April 4.  Plus, all Couples Holiday events will be held in the clubhouse not the Pavilion.

Mike Williams:  Treasurer   Income statement and Balance sheet sent to all members prior to this meeting.  MW shows that the CMC is very financially healthy.  MW commented that with 245 members, it seems that only 33% of the members are active playing on any given week.  Should we be concerned?  No.  Many play only once/week, many lay off because of injuries.

Tim Tyler:  Tournaments Tim said there will be a fun game for MNO in July which he and Gene Harp came up with.  Instructions for the team will await on each tee box or green.  A “fairness” discussion came up about minimum drives per player on team event Scrambles.  Normally, each player has to contribute 3 drives. In an ABCD player format, the ‘A’ player could use any many as 9 tee shots.   If a team is down to just 3 players (a no show) they seem to have an advantage because the ‘A’ player’s drive could potentially be used 12 times.  JG suggested a new twist to the Scramble rules regarding drives/player.  With a four man team, one player can only contribute 5 drives MAX.  If the team only has a threesome, one player can only contribute 7 drives MAX.  This new method could be an equalizer. The Board liked this idea.

Bill Stout:  Scoring  Bill again was able to produce the latest pace-of-play document showing, in this case,  that the last Saturday team game was beyond the normal 3.4 hour round.  Yet, the previous Wednesday round (Sweet 16) had more players (68) and was played at a faster pace than Saturday.  The data that Bill generates makes us all more conscious of pace-of-play.

Lloyd Johnson:  Website  Lloyd has nothing new to report on the CMC website.  He continues to keep it updated and interesting.

Tim Bonino:  Publicity  TB has already prepared another exceptional column for the Villager.  Look for it.  He is only limited by the publisher’s word count.

Mike Brown:  Greens and Golf  MB  reports that Dylan Perham is our new Assistant Superintendent.  The Cart barn is complete.  New carts come with sand/divot bottles.  We can fill our own bottles near the patio.

The bunker behind the #4 Red green has been removed and reseeded. Mike says Chris Bensel asks us to help inform players to drive no nearer than 30 feet of any green – certainly never between a green and bunker. Chris will have the Courses marshalled this summer between 3 pm and 8 pm.

Greg Benesh President  asks that we all, Board Members, write up a brief description of our Board responsibilities and be prepared to submit them next month.  With a transition of CMC members to the Board – these descriptions are most helpful to the ‘next guy’.

GB adjourns the meeting at 4:45 pm
